To Fly on Broken Wings by ~MiNTYFrESH-13:iconMiNTYFrESH-13:

In her youngest days,
when no roads were paved,
and her future was still unwrought.
She danced alone,
to the many tones,
leading to the world she sought.
She believed in things,
she had angel wings,
but there were battles to be fought.

As time went by,
and she tried to fly,
whispered voices held her down.
Her flight was cut,
and her wings were shut,
and her course could not be found.
There was music still,
voices could not kill,
words would not silence her sound.

And as she grew,
deep inside she knew,
she could keep her hopes residing.
But outside,
when she wanted to hide,
she would have to keep on fighting.
With a soul to shell,
and a heart to quell,
she tried hard to keep from crying.

She was wide awake,
Like a concious mistake,
smiles too far from her face.
If only she'd known,
That she wasn't alone,
in her tired search for grace.
She was sad and tired,
hope had long transpired,
and she wanted to leave this place.

Beyond the light,
on the darkest night,
she marched the cold dark street.
Moving fast and slow,
like the rivers flow,
never turning back her feet.
And the song inside,
felt like it had died,
there was silence in every beat.

She'd flow like the rain,
sadness washing her veins,
she had nothing left to show.
Peering over the ledge,
at the end of the edge,
of the world she sought to forego.
If she had any doubts,
she could not let them out,
she was too blind to let herself know.

But the deafening black,
of the river showed back,
a reflection that shook her awake.
Despite tears she had cried,
there was strength in her eyes,
and she knew this must be a mistake.
She was shattered to bits,
but the pieces still fit,
and she was not going to let them break.

Now

She's wide awake
in a heartless world
But she knows it's not in vain.

She's waiting for her dreams to come and pull away the pain.

She dreams that she's in fairytales,
but searches through the strain--
For fires alight in the dark of the night,
when all you can hear is the rain.

I spent a while on this one, and got kind of emotional about it.

It's sort of a plea against suicide, and a story about trying to maintain your identity growing up. The wings are metaphorical.

I feel very strongly about the position taken in this poem, and I hope you like it, and that it's not too corny or preachy.

I like the concept of the girl with wings when i'm guessing she was a child (5-9ish). and how once she grew up (both physically and mentally) she thought the world was too much, and she couldn't be what she wanted--that she wanted it to end. But when she went to try suicide, she remembered some things. (i wish everyone could...) because people who attempt and fail, most of them regret trying at all.

Buuuuut... some of the flow is wrong. You could do without some sections--a lot of it was good. A good tone, rhymes... but some of the phrases kinda give a bad feeling with how they're told, and some just kind of seem to just be there. I think if you re-read it, with this in mind, you might be able to see what i mean and work with it a bit.

but other than that, it was over-all good. =)

Thank you. You got the point, and I agree that some parts are off, but I can't pinpoint directly what yet. I generally wait a few days for the flow to weaken in my mind, and then go back and mess with it, and see what improvements I can make.

Thank you for the helpful comment.

I like this... I'm not sure what to say about it, but I understand and I would never argue this.

No it's not corny - and I got the suicide implication right away. It's a strong message - everyone needs to realize that no matter how bad things might seem, death is NEVER the answer! And sad that it is most often contemplated by young people, especially when they are the ones with so much to live for if they just don't give up.

Thanks a lot.

Yeah, a lot of the time people are too young to even be considering it. A lot of people are sad, but most of the time, it'll get better.

At least on this side of the world...
